Album Watch: The Ballad Of Mariah Carey

Saturday, October 18, 2008

My advice to those who want to really understand the essence of Mariah Carey's music is to just grab all of her albums (minus the current E=MC2, which is the diva's worst album by a longshot) and be done...but that's if you want to spend the money. Thank goodness for compilations, right? While Mariah is set to release her new video for single, "I Stay In Love" next week, waiting in the wings is a crash course in Mariah Carey ballads. The import album, The Ballads (ooh, innovative name!) contains some hits and odd choices on its tracklisting..."Hero", "One Sweet Day" and "Vision Of Love" are there in rightful glory but "All I Want For Christmas Is You" and "Dreamlover" are considered ballads? And why the weird ass addition of the worst song on 1999's Rainbow, the Usher duet, "How Much"? Whoever compiled this together certainly just got shoved in the mouth with a list of Mariah songs and was just randomly picked titles that sounded like ballads. Why couldn't "I Don't Wanna Cry", "Babydoll", "Butterfly", "Melt Away" and "Can't Let Go" be featured? And how dare that "We Belong Together" is MIA. Also this would've been a grand opportunity to include some rare tracks...might I suggest "Everything Fades Away", "Do You Think Of Me" and "There Goes My Heart"? So my suggestion is that you don't even remotely touch this collection with a ten foot poll...just invest in the albums. But for those brave souls...just be forewarned! The Ballads, hits stores on October 28th.
