First Impressions: Evolve Along With The Lege

Sunday, October 12, 2008

Not to say that John Legend was ever boring...he just never had a shot of Red Bull, that's all. John took a sip of the energy brew and made his third installment, Evovler quite the party starter. While he was strictly all about vintage soul on his first two efforts, 2004's Get Lifted and 2006's Once Again, it's nice to hear John stepping out of his comfort zone and giving the soulful black and ivory keys a bit of a break. On Evovler, John goes into a electro-soul mode, opting for brassier synths and edgier bass lines but still sticking to the blueprint of his soulful style. The dazzling, "Green Light" is a hyperactive mesh of silky soul and techno-trip hop with OutKast's Andre 3000 providing an appearance. He is also the one responsible for the infectious beat and it's a classic jam in the making. Andre 3000 isn't the only one joining John for the party as rapper, Kanye West, and singers, Brandy and Estelle all make appearances. Evolver doesn't step out of bounds and go for a generic R&B meets hip-hop sound like one might suspect. Instead Evovler mixes things up with the Reggae infused, "No Other Love" and goes for a lush techno crawl on the sensual "Good Morning" . "Quickly" is the single to watch as John and Brandy make beautiful music together on this 90's revival mid-tempo as is the 80's funk revival of "It's Over." All the while pumping up the dance floor, John still doesn't lose his touch as he still delivers the ballad goods. The soaring inspirational number, "If You're At There" leads the pack and closes the album out on a high note. Appropriately titled, Evovler shows John in a funkier mindset but still very much the smooth operator. John Legend gets the "green light".

  1. This is really sad and late but I just listen to this album in it's entirety like 2 days ago and I know that you wrote a review on it. I wanted to know your thoughts on it and you took the words right out of my mouth. The man never had Red Bull until this record.
