Remember The Time: Sure As The Sky's Blue

Obscure to the core but if you dig around in mid-80's R&B vinyl you might find nestled somewhere Bernard Wright's 1985 hit, "Who Do You Love". This song was introduced to me by a mix tape my Dad (the musical soul who fueled me) had concocted. A Google search and a mp3 download later, it's in rotation on my player and it's one of those songs that every time I listen to it, it never seems to get old. In fact, I didn't even realize the song was sampled throughout LL Cool J's "Loungin (Remix)" till now...To my knowledge, Bernard Wright started out as a fusion jazz musician working alongside the likes of drummer Lenny Williams and trumpet player, Tom Browne (you know "Funkin' 4 Jamaica"). Two albums later and then he switched gears when he dropped the more commercial R&B laden, 1985's Mr. Wright. Is it safe to call him a one-hit-wonder as "Who Do You Love" was his highest charting single? (#6 R&B) Bah! Who cares? The song is mid-80's funk gold, catchy as a cold and the music video is beyond cute. Yes, I said cute, the spinning around effect during the chorus was kind of unique for its time and the storyline of one-night stand blossoming into "true" romance is purely a rom-com flick in the making. Plus dig on Bernard's coif...a hay-wire afro and a Karate Kid-esque head band...all kinds of win.
