"Sweet Somebody" -Shannon (1983)

The Godmother of Freestyle, Shannon brought the goods when she released "Sweet Somebody". While"Let The Music Play" is her crowning achievement and introduced us to what is known as "power pop" (aka "freestyle"), I find "Sweet Somebody" the little gem that could. It's got a laid-back groove but the bass is still jangling, the synths warm and Shannon's vocals are sugary grainy sweet as she glides right through the lyrics. The song, to my knowledge, didn't chart but got some spins in the club circuit. I'd like to wonder about if Shannon made it bigger than Madonna, what would've happend...hmm...ponder that thought. Still it's one of Shannon's greats and sorely slept on.

I love how the three fools sitting in the front of the stage are so unenthused and clapping off beat, hell the dancers behind Shannon aren't even remotely dancing...Shannon and that little hair flip she does is 80's gold...Is it bad that I like that outfit?
