Spin Me Right Round: Rufus's Last Run

Wednesday, October 22, 2008

Clearly this is a diamond in the rough and one that hasn't been dug up in well...decades. Rufus and Chaka Khan were on shaky ground when their official last album, 1981's Camouflage dropped. Chaka Khan had already built a successful solo career and well, people were more interested in that than her being with the band she had made funk history with for over a decade. Camouflage can be viewed as the band's last ahoy as the album took on it's namesake and was completely blended into obscurity. Still, by far, Camouflage is no fluke and it gives a healthy dose of spinning and rock steady early 80's funk. From the rousing opener, "Better Together" to the feisty punch of "Highlight", Rufus and CK are in fine form. It's glossier and slicker than a bottle of nail polish, and it obviously picks up where 1979's Quincy Jones produced, Masterjam, left off. There are some gems to unearth such as the highly underrated ballad, "Sharing The Love" which is gushy without being in your face about it. The interesting blend of Reggae and rock on "Quandary" is brooding as is the bluesy wail of "Losers In Love". Rufus and Chaka Khan clearly never gave a dull moment as each album they produced is different and more ambitious than the last. It would be sensible for me to claim 1975's Ask Rufus as the band's finest, but there is room to bring Camouflage into the top tier as well.
