Remember The Time: Sheena's So Modern

Tuesday, November 25, 2008

Yes, Sheena Easton can sing one hell of a pop song...or a New Jack Swing song, depending on what time frame you're talking about. Still some of her music videos are kind of underwhelming...therefore you will not be seeing "Sugar Walls" or even "Strut" which are exciting songs but just feature Sheena staring at the camera and blinding us with glitter and day-glo garb. Not exciting to me. So I weeded through some Sheena vids thought of posting her version of Billy Joel's "The Entertainer" but that frilly red shirt was distracting as I opted for "Modern Girl". This song is the flashiest thing on Sheena's 1980 self-titled debut and its one of her best tracks. Sure its heavy on the perky synths and cheestastic harmonizing, but this is pure "independent women anthem" gold. The music video is a play by play to the song...Sheena cooking breakfast for her man, rolling her eyes at her man, catching the train, flipping through a magazine, going to work, dissing her get the gist, she's a modern girl and doesn't need a man to get her through the day *snaps fingers*. Plus she gets her hip swivel on on this neon platform. Great little pop track and Sheena's really rockin' that short crop of hair and blue smudgy likes!
