Saturday Morning Cartoons Get Avant Garde?

Saturday, November 8, 2008

Kanye West and Gnarls Barkley must be recalling their Batman pajama, Fruity Pebbles Saturday mornings in front of the TV days, as they have both unleashed videos based on the movable art form. Must they have both drank from the same sugary milk bowl? Who knows but it's quite amusing that these artists have decided to "re-animate" the way we view videos. So who is worthy of a Saturday morning cartoon slot?

It has been quiet on the Gnarls Barkley front as the dynamic duo of Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse have been tip-toeing through the charts with various songs off of their recent 2nd installment, The Odd Couple. The monster success of 2006's "Crazy" hasn't been duplicated off of this effort but GB still continue to color outside the lines for a truly riveting listening and viewing experience. The short but sweet vid for new single,"Mystery Man" feels like a pop-up book come to life. Dare I say it's cute? But it fits the song to a tee and shows that GB haven't lost their ability to think outside the box.

Kanye West on the other hand provides a more advanced animation for the vid of new 808's and Heartbreak single, "Heartless". I have voiced my opinion about "Heartless" in the past and I still feel this is an underwhelming tune. The video is an ambitious one and Kanye's fight to stick out like a sore un-thugged out rapper is a success, as this is quite a unique turn thanks to it's homages to possibly movies, Cool World and the recent A Scanner Darkly. Still it can border on being quite lackluster due to it just being a concept of Kanye walking wayward down streets moaning and groaning. Maybe with a better concept, it might capture something but it just kind of makes you shrug your shoulders and go, "it's flashy but, so what"? Maybe I missed the memo but, when did Kanye start smoking cigarettes? I guess you can be anything you want to be when you're all toon-ed up.
