Remember The Time: Painted On Jeans For The Caribbean Queen

Friday, December 19, 2008

What are painted on jeans? That was probably before my time but if someone can explain, let me friggin' know so if it's an article of clothing that gets men hot under the collar, well, I need to put them on my Christmas list pronto. Flat out...I love Billy Ocean. His ballads are dripping with sap, but his up tempos are whipped cream on a brownie. Most don't know that Mr. Ocean had a couple of funk/disco hits in the late 70's but when he released Suddenly in 1984, he became a smooth operator on the charts. "Caribbean Queen" is one of his best known tracks and one that never seems to escape karaoke bars across the world. Still the song is quite accessible as it is darn infectious, has a snappy bass line and an amazing sax solo. Whenever I hear this song, I wish sax solos in pop songs would make a comeback...Billy Ocean, just like Lionel Ritchie, has some of the most laugh out loud videos of the 80's, but hell, would Ne-Yo or even Chris Brown attempt to do something of this caliber? No. Billy shoots glances to his dancing "Caribbean queen", kinda stalks her, drinks champagne, does some cute side-step shuffling on stage, you know, cool guy stuff. R&B young-ins take notes, as Billy Ocean is a real Casanova at work.
