Song Stuck In My Head: The Best Thing To Cure Winter Blues

Tuesday, December 16, 2008

My BFF Brittany hipped me to who Ray LaMontagne is all about and I've been quite enthralled with his track, "You Are The Best Thing" ever since. From his 2008 album, Gossip In The Grain, the aforementioned track sounds like you are grazin' in the grass (can you dig it), sipping some peach ice tea in the summer sun. And well, I need that feeling since it is freckin' 18 degrees in north Texas at this moment (serious). What was surprising to me when I listened to Gossip In The Grain, is that this is the only ray of sunshine on it as the remainder of the album sounded like Debbie Downer's soundtrack to life...but thank goodness for "You Are The Best Thing" as I find it to be one of the best songs to emerge from this year. Ray's vocals remind me eerily of James Morrison's raspy tone, and one time I made the error of getting them mixed up when Brittany blasted the song one day...and that is kind of a sin in Audio Diva world. Aside from that, Ray has got quite a lovely horn infused soul number on his hands that tends to recall a Donny Hathaway state of mind.

  1. I don't know if hear the James Morrison reference, but the horns do remind me of Mr. Hathaway. This is the type of music that surprises me that it's still produced in 2008 and gets no recognition, while Soulja Boy's "Birdwalk" is considered the new hot thing (please, God, no).

Thanks for bringing this to our attention...

  2. LOL @ Soulja Boy, Mel you hit it on the nail, this song is catchy enough and is performed well, yet mediocre tunes get all the radio play...whoever is digging "Birdwalk" seriously needs to check themselves into the psych ward

No problem, that's what I love about blogging, letting folks know about different music, it's fun and we all learn something new!
