Spin Me Right 'Round: A Girl's Gotta Have Fun

Tuesday, December 16, 2008

Back in 1983, there was a neon orange haired wild child who was set out to squash out that little tart known only by one name. That wild child was known as Cyndi Lauper. While the comparisons between Cyndi and Madonna (the one-named "tart") are as old as Swatches, we've all gotten older and learned to appreciate them equally. Still, Cyndi's 1983 debut, She's So Unusual, is quite timeless, in the sense that it's one hell of a fun ride. A surge of guitars and synths erupt from the blazing opener, "Money Changes Everything" and from there the party has kicked off. Cyndi seized the day when she released, "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and "Time After Time" which have morphed into modern classics. Still this isn't all that Cyndi has in her canon. Her tongue n' cheek ode to bodily pleasure, "She Bop" is included as is the sparkling moody synth piece, "All Through The Night". Cyndi takes on a Prince tune ("When You Were Mine") and makes it truly her own, not to mention making a song that The Police wish they had came up with ("Witness"). Cyndi's exuberant approach to this record also is the main attraction as she pours every ounce of her personality into it. Filled to the brim with spunk and heaps of heart, She's So Unusual is a pop classic through and through.

Rating: 9.5/10

Cyndi on Solid Gold performing "All Through The Night"....I like the lighting effects, if TRL had done something like that, they would still be on air....Dig on that skirt, Cyndi really liked to layer up...
