Wipe Off The Dust: Krush Groovin', Body Movin'

Monday, December 8, 2008

They don't make 'em like this anymore. Seriously, would you pay to see a movie starring Kanye West, T.I., Lil' Wayne, 50 Cent and...say for kicks, Lil' Kim? Nope too many egos and it would be hot curdled mess of a nightmare. Now look at Krush Groove. Sure its 1985, lead star, Blair Underwood wasn't on People's Sexy Mens List and the storyline was kind of all over the place, but this movie is a timepiece and recalls the days of classic hip-hop. I will always admit I'm just a mere passerby in the hip-hop market, but if it stands out, I'll perk my ears up and frankly, old school hip-hop is my cup of tea. Maybe its just me but hip-hop at that time was all about hustling and sweatin' out the pores onto the paper...it just seemed more real and honest....While Krush Groove had a muddled story line, it was actually the loose biography of Def Jam Records and how it's founder Russell Simmons started up one of rap's biggest franchises. The movie features some of hip-hop's first class, Run DMC, Kurtis Blow, LL Cool J, The Beastie Boys, The Fat Boys and for pop factor, New Edition and a rather fierce Sheila E., playing embellished versions of themselves. What kicks about this movie is its soundtrack as it's an essential packaging of classic flows and soulful sounds. Non-rap stars such as Chaka Khan, Force M.D.'s and Debbie Harry (who was one of the first to bring rap to mainstream...serious) are present on this now long out of print black wax. It's quite puzzling that this album is off the market considering that Def Jam Records is a success story. So as I pull out my Swiffer Dusters and wipe off the dust...check out this long lost jam of Chaka Khan with the Fat Boys on one of my favorite cuts from the soundtrack and see more Krush Groove videos after the jump!

*The Fat Boys-"All You Can Eat": That a hella lot of food...*

*Kurtis Blow-"If I Ruled The World": Kanye West wasn't the first ego-tripper...*

*Run DMC-"It's Like That": And that's the way it is...*

*Sheila E.-"Holly Rock": Gah! This song is just so sharp!*
