Album Watch: Essentially Madonna

Friday, March 20, 2009

Greatest hits compilations are a crapshoot. You either get all the goods and then some (Cameo's Anthology) or you get a ton of uninspired remixes and a sprinkle of real hits (Whitney Houston's weak The Greatest Hits). Hopefully, Madonna will get my memo about not clogging up a hits comp with unnecessary semi-hits, new tracks and remixes as she preps to release a new greatest hits compilation. Aside from the fact that Madonna is recording new material for it and it will be her last record on the Warner Brothers label, this new hits package is being hyped up to be "essential". Any Madonna-holic knows that just purchasing the Material Girl's 26 year output is essential in itself, but considering the fact that we haven't had a really complete greatest hits package, makes me wonder what is really "essential" Maddie? This is the same question Madonna's manager, Guy Oseary has been stewing on, as he's been a busy bee over on Twitter recently asking fans what songs they think truly deserve the spot on the album. So to save Madonna from greatest hits album embarrassment, I say, combine what was good about Madonna's Immaculate Collection (1990) and GHV2 (2001) and also don't chop up all the songs so we can get the original and remastered version of the classics we love like "Holiday" and "Express Yourself" in all their complete glory. A few B-sides and rare tracks wouldn't hurt either...but I'm probably being greedy and if I had my way, this would be a box-set with a "Boy Toy" belt buckle as a complimentary collector's item. As for the new songs...we'll just leave that up to the imagination.
