Artist Watch: Gettin' On The Good Foot With Black Joe Lewis

Monday, March 30, 2009

Want to cleanse your palate of the bitter, sticky aftertaste that mainstream radio residue seems to cause? That's where Austin bred group, Black Joe Lewis and The Honeybears comes in, as they are what you want to do the job right. I stumbled upon the track "Sugarfoot", and had to recheck the facts just to make sure this band wasn't some 1960's/1970's funk n' blues outfit that got lost in the shuffle. The reason for my confusion is that the band sounds like a trip back into time, with the horns blasting you backwards to the days of a whoopin' n' hollerin' James Brown in his prime. There are lots of funky stuff going on with this band as they have been wowing the Austin music listening public with their spunky flavor. The band just recently released their debut, Tell 'Em What Your Name Is! and from the sound of tracks that I have heard, it's worth shelling out the buckaroos for. What you have before you are two tracks, the illustrious "Sugarfoot" and the equally engaging grit of "Gunpowder", for your listening pleasure. Since the media players are on the fritz, take a peek at the vid below, as it is sure to tickle your taste buds to sample the rest of their steamin' pot o' funk gumbo. I'm not pulling your leg...this is just fun with a capital "F".
