First Impressions: Glitter On The Wet Streets

It's not titled It's Blitz for show. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are a band shrouded in mystery as they cater to a universally diverse crowd, but they maintain to be indie rock's best kept secret. However they do it, they do it well, and even when the Yeahs take a dive into the mainstream, they still manage to be true to themselves. This is the case with the New York trio's third installment, It's Blitz, as the band tries on a new pair of shoes...but you won't hear any heel blisters or any pinching, this new pair fits beautifully. The Yeahs have managed to improve upon the formula of their last album, 2006's Show Your Bones, and submerge it into shimmery synths and pulsating techno throbs, and all driven to the production beats of TV On The Radio's Dave Sitek and Nick Lunay. At first listen, it might throw you for a loop, but It's Blitz manages still captivate, making you think the Yeahs have been doing this all along. The blaze of opener, and first single, "Zero" grabs you by the collar and pulls you into its fuss while "Soft Shock" is a plush and hypnotizing number. Lead vocalist, Karen O. doesn't falter vocal wise as she drapes her voice over each piece and on cuts like personal fave, "Heads Will Roll", she takes her husky mezzo-soprano and has a good time. Things really simmer on "Dull Life", which is not the least bit dull with its gang of guitars and "Dragon Queen" is an shuffling 80's funk piece, just with a shadier approach. "Skeletons" feels like an Kate Bush ballad with its kooky drum march, and it's arguably one of the better tracks. While it may sound like the Yeahs are "selling out"or being a little bit too "artsy", they manage to make an album that even when you don't want to listen, you do and find yourself pulled into a bluesy-rock vortex that is sprinkled in glitter and sweat.
