The Gospel: Is An Eclectic MTV In The Wee Morning Hours Better Than Nothing?

Wednesday, April 1, 2009

For those who have been following me since the dawn of my blogging existence, have known of my loathing of the channel formerly known as Music Television. The enraged emotion I spouted went from a simple post, into a full-blown article for my school's paper, where my instructor happily noted, "You are intelligently mad about this." Well, I am. If there is any channel that is being put to shoddy use it is MTV. While it would be easy for me to spout out disgruntlement after disgruntlement over the programming that is being shown on MTV these days (reality, reality...and oh, yeah, more reality shows) in this post, I won't...I'm actually going to give them a Tootise Roll pop for effort. Effort that they have exuded by bringing back that familiar block o'videos. Starting this week, the channel have started airing a six hour block of videos, called AMTV, that range from a cornucopia of current to classic vids as well as MTV concert footage from years gone by. The network is promising that they will also show up-in-coming artists to the AMTV roster. Hmm...not too bad. The only downside to all of this is that these video morsels are being aired during 3 AM-9AM. But it's a start, folks. Other promises that are being made is that the network has plans to bring back the beloved, Unplugged series...but let's not get our hopes up. On the other hand, what is keeping me kind of amused is the arrangement of the videos being aired. Whoever decided to sandwich Depeche Mode's "People Are People" in between Akon's "Beautiful" and Keri Hilson and Kanye West's "Knock You Down" were simply playing an April Fool's prank. Still will this concept of eclectic video viewing be a long-standing thing? Especially since the video block is at the oddest of hours...because I don't know about you, but I'm asleep from 3 AM to 9 AM. Would artists (and their sales) actually benefit from this? Or is this just MTV trying to keep the yapping monkeys off their backs for now? MTV keep on being classy.

  1. MTV is something else. I really don't know how to express the anger that I feel against that channel right now. I agree that MTV has become like every other station a reality slut bag whore but I still believed that one day MTV would go back to videos and they have on and off but MTV is still corrpt with shows like "From G's to Gents"lol. Hopefully they can slowly but surely get back to the music.

Oh and P.S. the random order of music videos doesn't come as a shock to me. True story about 8 or 9 years ago(i feel really old.lol) when a group called Dream came out they would play their videos at the most random time. It would litterally be Dream then a Red Hot Chilli Peppers video or Dream and Jay-Z video. And Dream would be catogrized as bubblegum pop so if that gives you any implications that they really don't care about the arrangements of videos, then there you go.

  2. I just don't understand why they don't just make a channel soley for all those MTV reality shows...they have two other wasteful channels, they could turn one into "reality" viewing only...I guess they want to be greedy or something, but I think they would benefit if they just had one channel for all the reality crap and another for music ONLY

LOL at slut bag whore, that's a new phrase to use :)
