First Impressions: Toni Braxton Brings Back The Big Ballad

Wednesday, May 6, 2009

Toni Braxton helped me figure out what is missing from R&B radio. A sincere and powerhouse BALLAD! Well, done the Toni Braxton way, of course. A couple of days ago, a new Toni track washed onto musical shores and its a stone cold winner. It's unclear whether the ballad, "Not A Chance" is to be featured on Toni's upcoming album (tentatively titled Pulse), but from my knowledge she is indeed releasing an album this year. Here's hoping that this stunner of a song, which is produced by production dream team the Underdogs, gets some sort of official release. The track brings to mind such Toni classics like "Unbreak My Heart" and "Love Shoulda Brought You Home" and it's a real good look for her. This song has a great arrangement, it almost seems layered in a way, and it's got a real soft electronic symphony feel to it. Obviously, I like, I love this and I'm usually a hard sell when comes to ballads but this is controlled, sublime and on point. What more could you ask for?
