First Impressions: Mistress Mary Somewhat Contrary

Wednesday, June 10, 2009

So conflicted. Mary J. Blige is a constant favorite, yet I'm not quite sure if I consider this new single entry a step back or a step forward, but let's give it the benefit first. It's a BRAND NEW Mary joint, so of course there is excitement. Mary J. surprisingly dropped a new single over the weekend called, "The One". As I am on the catch up, from the first listen, the Queen of Soul/Hip-Hop sounds like she jumping on the Keri Hilson mobile and riding a tad recklessly into some territory that seems a bit too limiting for her. Limiting in the sense that MJB is experiementing with the auto-tune generator on this punchy club banger. While a few techno vocals doesn't hurt, when it comes from someone who is vocally gifted, it comes off a bit well...lazy. While the flow of newcomer rapper, Drake, adds a little sumthin' extra, the track rides on repetitiveness that gets old, too quick. In fact, this kind of track could be easily voiced by any youngblood female R&B vocalists in the game. It's giving me flashbacks of when "Family Affair" dropped back in 2001 and everyone was eating sour grapes over Mary's new venture, everyone pretty much grew to love it over time. So maybe in later days it'll work, but for right now, Mary should go back to the drawing board on this.

The One ft. Drake
