Wipe Off The Dust: Cartoon Voices, Pop Choices

Wednesday, June 3, 2009

Tommy Pickles has a pop album. Or should I say, the long-time voice of the baby crusader from Nickelodeon's Rugrats has a pop album. E.G. Daily is whom I'm speaking about. E.G. Daily, (real name Elizabeth Daily) has a lengthy list of voice-over work she has done, from voicing Bubbles on The Powerpuff Girls to various cartoon characters in shows like Recess and Hey Arnold! . Before she lent her voice to Saturday morning cartoons, in the 80's E.G. released a couple of soundtrack songs for movies such as Scarface, Better Off Dead and Summer School. In 1985, she released her debut album, Wild Child which sparked a #1 dance hit with "Say It, Say It", a real funky pop number that was produced by John "Jellybean" Benitez. E.G. continued to release albums and singles throughout the 80's, but unfortunately, she never gained the success of her first single. If you can get your hands on Wild Child or any of her soundtrack stuff from Better Off Dead, you're in for some great 80's pop/rock tuneage, trust.

One Way Love (Better Off Dead)

On the other front, there is Lisa Lougheed, a Canadian pop star who was brought to fame by voicing a character on the cartoon show, The Raccoons. Lisa sang the show's theme song, "Run With Us", which sparked a brief singing career and a debut album called, Evergreen Nights. In 1992, Lisa parted ways with her cartoon alter-ego and released a new album called, World Love, which sparked a hit single called, "Love Vibe". World Love is quite a find, if you crave that high-energy synth and dance sound, and its quite infectious once you hear it. Imagine if Paula Abdul and Ce Ce Peniston were one person, and you've got an idea of what Lisa Lougheed is about. Lisa dropped her last album, Peace & Harmony in 1993, but has since gone MIA since the mid-90's, for shame!
