First Impressions: 'She Wolf' Has A Lil' Funk In Her Trunk

Saturday, July 11, 2009

Yes, "La Loba" the Spanish version of "She Wolf" came out a couple of weeks ago. But it was bad timing for me as I was up to my ears in Spanish final studying and I was not in the mood to enjoy a musical Spanish experience. Call me hateful...but when you've written and heard too many conjugated and reflexive verbs, you don't even want to hear them in come out of Shakira mouth, no matter how good it sounds. Now I have Shakira's undivided attention as the English version has surfaced and might I say it's actually pretty good. The chorus is a wee bit jarring to me, as Shakira goes from her gruff contralto to a breathy water thin whine...but maybe over time it won't be so bothersome. On the other hand, the rest of the track feels like a spacey disco escapade that truly grooves and moves. What I like is that there isn't too much going on in the song, or rather the production isn't bloated like half of the pop tracks nowadays. The electro-roboto Shakira is a nice welcome indeed as it's different from anything we've heard from her prior. Very curious to see how this song will perform and if Shakira will be shaking those non-lying hips to another hit single.
