"Stand Out"/"I 2 I" - Tevin Campbell (1995)

Yes, I'm cheating as this is a two-fer....and yes, I'm dead serious at the picks. When Tevin Campbell awoke from his crypt to do the O'Jays' tribute at the BET Fail Awards last month, my first initial thought was: "Now why couldn't he have sung the tunes from 'A Goofy Movie'? It would sure liven up this suck fest called an award show." For those who don't understand my thinking, back in mid-90's R&B teen crooner, Tevin Campbell took time out of his solo schedule to voice the singing role of the Michael Jackson/Bobby Brown hybrid character Powerline in the cartoon Disney flick, A Goofy Movie. The cartoon film revolves around a crazy road trip adventure between Goofy and his son, Max. Yes, it's a bit typical, but its Disney, not Scorsese. It's also a movie that seems to get a cult following from folks around my age...it's truly amazing how people bond over this movie. I can't tell you how many times whenever "Leaning Tower of Cheeza" or "Possum Park" are brought up in a conversation, I make a friend. I'm betting I will meet the future Mr. Audio Diva this way, it just seems more plausible. Maybe the film got a cult following because it's the last great thing Disney has put their logo on, but I secretly like to think its because of these two songs, which are pristine musical diamonds. There is some urgent energy going on in these R&B/Pop jams and Tevin's slick vocals add to the greatness. Don't laugh. Embrace.
