"Subtle Invitation" -Mariah Carey (2002)

In light of Mariah Carey preparing for some "memoirs", it seems fitting to dive back into the crates and recall musical times where she did something a bit well...mature. I say this because, I know Mariah can do better than what she's been spouting these days and its proof with this track right here. In retrospect, Charmbracelet was the prep for what 2005's The Emancipation of Mimi was to be, as the material was a bit slicker and experimental. Most forget about it and some fans pretend it doesn't exist. As for me, Charmbracelet was a grand return back to formula from what 2001's Glitter was. There were a couple of strong numbers nestled in its 15 tracklisting, and one such number was non-single, "Subtle Invitation". Produced by 7 Aurelius, "Subtle" was the contrary to its title as it was a brash soulful number that boasted live instrumentation and Mariah taking a cue from Jill Scott and Angie Stone. This neo-soul meets jazz hooks up with 70's funk joint was on par and was the best number on the set, in my opinion. In honesty, Mariah should go this route more often on future recordings. Sure she's a teensy bit screechy towards the end, but the number is still strong and shows that Mariah can step outside the box every once in awhile.
