Artist Watch: Andy Allo Is Anything But 'UnFresh'

Friday, December 4, 2009

Its been awhile since you've been graced with some newness, and since Friday is the best time to discover/re-discover music (as you can spend the whole weekend marinating in your new findings), why not we get to know Andy Allo? Like Kool & The Gang have sung, "she's fresh, and exciting..."

During my absence, I got a chance to sit down and listen to albums that seem to be collecting dust on my computer and liter my nightstand. Andy Allo's debut, UnFresh was one of those albums that was downloaded many months ago, but that was long overdue for a listen. To make a long story short, once the play button was pushed it grabbed my undivided attention.

Hailing from the Republic of Cameroon and gaining her musical footing in Sacramento and San Francisco, the guitarist and songwriter has been making waves in the independent music circles as one to watch due to her crisp vocal tone and sleek musical stylings, which she describes as "Alt.Hip.Soul". She's being compared to the likes of Corrine Bailey Rae, Erykah Badu with a dash of Brittany Bosco in the brewing pot, and well, already she's in good company from those comparisons. Allo's debut, UnFresh needs to drop the prefix from its stem, as its a brisk drink of electro-hip-hop soul meets acoustic folk that is welcoming to the ear drums. Songs like the infectious title track, and the whimsical, "Dreamland" show off unique musicianship, while "Knew You At All" and its bare bones girl meets guitar shows off Allo's comforting vocal spread. It's no secret, Allo is one to watch.

A little taste of what is 'fresh' from UnFresh...
