Audio Vision: The Chaka Khan Tribute Was The Only Thing I Remembered From The Soul Train Awards

Wednesday, December 2, 2009

Did you remember that the Soul Train Awards happened on Sunday? Don't feel bad, it was kind of janky, save for a few golden moments (and not Toni Braxton unleashing her cougar mentalities on Trey Songz), but all around, forgettable, hence why I'm just now getting to it. One performance, which I wouldn't have minded to go on just a little longer was the Chaka Khan tribute, that featured Erykah Badu, Ledisi, Fantasia and Angie Stone singing from the Book Of Khan.

Best bits for those too lazy to click play:
  • Erykah Badu dressed like Miss Khan circa 1976 with feathers adorned in her hair, rocking the fringe bell bottoms and singing the classic Rufus cut, "Stay". Yes, and thank you!
  • Ledisi laying her voice over "Through The Fire" and making this song better than ever
  • Fantasia's screaming singing face. It's so scrunchy and determined.
  • When Angie Stone turns the microphone to Chaka Khan to sing "Ain't Nobody" and Chaka, without hesitation says and points, "You sing!" Even though she probably meant, "I came to see you sing my damn song, Angie, so sing it, stop waving that microphone in my face, I'm Chaka Khan dammit and this my tribute, you sing to me!"
