First Impressions: Timbaland, I Only Care About Esthero on 'Shock Value 2'

Monday, December 7, 2009

Shockvalue 2 is arriving this week. Brandy has a new hip-hop handle (Bran' Nu...mmkay), Nelly Furtado, Justin Timberlake, JoJo, and Drake and other hot music stars of now are featured on it...yadda yadda. When I saw that trip-hop, soul artist Esthero was to be featured on this, I immediately zoned in on that alone, and kind of bypassed the rest of the collaborations Timbaland has featured on his second collaborative album.

Not to downgrade the album (the cuts with Jet and newcomer, SoShy ain't too shabby) but I get a little Vercua Salt whenever I'm awaiting the return of the Canadian vocalist's follow-up to 2005's Wikked Little Girls. Thus my bratty and greedy evil twin rears its ugly head.

Esthero is loftily featured on two tracks off of Shockvalue 2, and they are a nice reminder of what Esthero has to offer the music world. The best of the two is her pairing with The Fray on the track, "Undertow". It has a subtle yet persistent chug of a beat that infuses three different sounds and musicians wonderfully. The end result is a merge of the hip-hop growl of Timbaland, the light rock of The Fray and Esthero's soothing bedroom soul. All mixed together for quite a musical confection.
