"Ain't Nuthin' Goin' On But The Rent" - Gwen Guthrie (1986)

When Ms. Guthrie blares out: "Bill collectors at my door!"...I know her plight. It's never fun whenever its 8 am on a Saturday morning, and somebody from the rental office is knocking on your door wanting you to pay $10 for a water bill. Or when you have a credit card company on the hour, every hour calling you for charges past due...so much for being a valued customer two months ago. *sounds of Audio Diva cutting up a credit card* Both of those are true rent/credit stories, and in these recession times, the snaps of broken credit cards and loud bangings on doors are heard all over. Thus, songs like Ms. Guthrie's 1986 hit resonate so much more, even though it's a sparkling R&B-funk number which provokes me to dance, and not pay my rent.

Guthrie is one of those songwriter-session singer success stories I like. She sung back-up for singers such as Aretha Franklin, Billy Joel and even Madonna (Gwen's vocals are all over Madge's debut album if you listen closely), and then she said, "I'm tired of being in the background...I can do all bad by myself" and released some rather funky solo albums, that people seem to forget about. Though forgotten, they are still little nuggets of musical gems if you can get your hands on them. From Gwen's fourth album, Good To Go Lover, "Ain't Nuthin..." was her biggest smash and it remains truth to this day, cause well, there isn't any romance unless there are some currency involved. Right?
