'Tis The Season: Heard Donny Hathaway, Christmas Can Begin Now

Monday, December 7, 2009

It's official. It truly is Christmas time whenever I hear the flourish of brass instruments and Donny Hathaway's velvety croon begin with, "Hang all the mistletoe..." blaring over the loud speakers in a store. I heard this in (of all places) the Dollar Tree the other day while buying a plastic poinsettia arrangement and some knock-off Apple Jacks cereal, and of course it got me into the spirit and I knew that Christmas had finally arrived.

Recorded in 1968 for a holiday compilation that featured other Soul heavyweights such as Otis Redding, "This Christmas" has become one of those soul classics, that has morphed into being a traditional Christmas carol, like "Deck The Halls" or "O Holy Night". It has been covered over 100 times (!!) with acts like Tamia, *NSYNC, Diana Ross, Destiny's Child and Peabo Bryson adding their own personal touches to this song. While I enjoy other covers (Yutaka and SWV's to name a few), Donny's original is still the pristine choice for the holidays.

This Christmas
