'Tis The Season: Vanessa Williams' "What Child Is This?"

Tuesday, December 1, 2009

Honestly, I babble about Vanessa Williams' version of "What Child Is This?" far too often around the holiday season. It's all due to the fact this song just soothes and wrings out all the liquidized stress that seems to flow through my veins, and I feel like I should sprinkle this stress reliever to others. Especially around this time of year. This rendition takes me back to a simpler time, where the start of December meant magic, not "Great, I have two weeks left of school, a mound of work and I have no clue what my professor was talking about all semester." Somehow this particular song manages to calm my high-strung arse down, like warm vanilla chai tea sloshing around in my mug. In addition to all that, this track is my favorite cover of a traditional Christmas song, and the best cut on the singer/actress' 1996 Starbright holiday album. It's all in how Vanessa coffee-houses this song up to where the dusty upright bass and the tumbling piano make it sound like something that could be played months after Christmas. Cool as if you bit into some peppermint bark candy, Vanessa Williams delivers some much needed Christmas calm.
