Audio Vision: Even In Classic Understatement, Janelle Monae Vibrantly Wows On 'BaBopByeYa'

Wednesday, October 20, 2010

Sometimes scanning the Tube of Yous at insomniac hours has you unearth some real gems. If you were hoping that Janelle Monae would try to shine some light on the other compositions off of the sensational, The ArchAndroid, you're in for a treat. Monae, along with the Emory Symphony Orchestra, debuted "BaBopByeYa" a few days ago at Emory University's Schwartz Center in Atlanta, Georgia for a special performance, and it is a feast of sounds. Grr...nothing this exciting happened at my university. Well, I'm jealous.

The almost nine minute long opus that clearly defines the album as a whole got a rich and glowing performance from the student orchestra and of course, Miss Monae herself, as she got her Marian Anderson on. Shaky camera work aside, it is crystal clear that you can see Monae, dressed in a understated flowing black gown, and hear her as she plows through and delivers once again another top-notch vocal performance. This girl just keeps on slaying. I'm quite amazed that she took the most layered track (and one of my favorites) on Android and translated it well on stage. "BaBopByeYa" is not the most digestible of songs due to its complexity and range, but it's quite masterful if you hear the original version. Truly, you really don't need my commentary further as Monae's actions speak louder than my words ever could. If you have not gotten The ArchAndroid by now...you are just living life the wrong way.
