First Impressions: 'Well, Well, Well', If It Isn't Duffy....

Wednesday, October 6, 2010

I'm such a great daughter. I usually try and make my Dad a mix CD every so often, so he can stay "current" and be awesome at life. So since he liked Duffy's "Mercy" so much, I had to put it on a mix for him. Just the other day, he was playing it in the car and he asked me, "What happened to this Duffy person? Does she have a new song?" Even my self-appointed music know-it-all self had no answer to those questions. I pretty much figured that Duffy was destined to be yet another one-hit-wonder, considering how people loved/loathed "Mercy" and didn't listen to anything else from Rockferry (which was pretty darn exceptional). Till now.

Duffy is back with "Well, Well, Well", which is off of her upcoming sophomore album, Endlessly, hitting stores this November 29th. Wait? What? I did not know this... The Roots back up Duffy on this hip swiveling track, that has already caused a stir with fans because well...well...well...it plays on the same gimmick that "Mercy" did, it sort of annoys you to like it. I'm not saying the song is all bad, the blasting of horns and the fast pace beat aren't hard to ignore, but there is something rather lackluster about it. Maybe this will have to grow on me, but it just feels too close to the comfort of her debut single, as there is no stretch of her talents. Maybe you can give your verdict after taking a listen below and see if Duffy has it in the bag, or has it all wrong.
