First Impressions: Cee-Lo Green Still Loves Us Anyway

Thursday, November 10, 2011

What do you do when you have a hit album with gobs of hits? You release it again, that's what! Cue the entrance of Cee-Lo Green's The Lady Killer, one of last year's best, as it's getting a makeover of sorts.

While he didn't get my memo to combine any tracks from the fantastic Stray Bullets mixtape (which out-shone some of Killer's material) to the beefed up extended edition, Cee-Lo has something better and that is two new tracks, "Scarlet Fever" and "Anyway".

"Anyway", which follows in the jovial soul-pop step we've grown to love from the crooner, is the first newbie to be released from the set, not to mention the sixth (!) single from the Killer project. You might be surprised at the pens that scribbled down this track as not only Green, but the folks from the electro/pop band Wallpaper, Ross Golan, and Weezer's Rivers Cuomo had a hand in making this quite the odd collabo. So if you're wondering why Cee-Lo sounds slicker on this cut than before, then there's you're answer. Some Goodie Mob/pre-Lady Killer enthusiasts might be put off by the surge of pop goodness on this track, but it's so infectious that there is no need to be a snob about anything. Peep the lyrical video for "Anyway" after the cut, and look out of the platinum edition of The Lady Killer to hit stores November 28th---just in time for the holiday rush.

  1. Ok, this new song is cute.

I'm with you on the Stray Bullets mixtape, way better than the record, sounded passionate and fierce, way less sleek and safe than the full record (that was good eh, but I had high expectations, I guess).

Same here. My expectations for 'Lady Killer' were HIGH after hearing 'Bullets' and I was somewhat disappointed with it. Thought I was alone in thinking that!

I see he's latching onto the pop mainstream as really those are the singles that are getting chart action. So I wasn't too surprised when I heard this of the direction he's starting to go.

  3. I already have "Scarlet Fever" on the Deluxe version of the album I purchased back when it came out (I'm in New Zealand, so not sure if there were different tracklists in different countries). It's pretty good, although definitely a bonus track.

The Deluxe version also included the songs "No One's Gonna Love You" (brilliant Band of Horses cover, probably my favourite thing he's done), "Everybody Loves You (Baby)" (more soul-pop goodness), and "Love Gun" (probably the closest to a Stray Bullets track, more raw). Weirdly, it omitted the regular album track, "Please".

Huh, that's interesting. Here in the US we didn't get "Scarlet Fever" or "Everybody Loves You", but on my version I actually had "Love Gun" and "No One's Gonna Love You" (great cover, the zone I like Cee-Lo to be in). Usually in the US we get short-changed on album-releases, lol.

Weird how they would omit "Please" with Selah Sue like that. It's also weird how there are about three different 'Lady Killer' albums out there--is there a purpose for that? LOL
