First Impressions: Bobby Womack and Lana Del Rey 'Glo'
Thursday, May 31, 2012
Ah, Bobby Womack. Whenever there are conversations about the holy grail of soul men, he is oddly left out when we name bounce names like Marvin, Donny, Sam, and Otis. Or maybe that's just me? Aside from being inducted into the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame and with memorable songs like "Across 110th Street" and "If You Think You're Lonely Now", to me he's obscenely underrated. The cool thing is that Mr. Womack is still kicking around and finding placement right among the youngsters (remember Gorillaz's "Stylo"? Yeah, that was awesome). I've been hearing in snatches good ol' buzz about his forthcoming, The Bravest Man In The Universe, his now 27th album. From a few listens here n' there with "Deep River" and the searing lead-off single, "Please Forgive My Heart" (man, that song is good), it's gearing up to be quite a treat for not only the soul purist but also for those who want to introduce themselves to Womack's revelry.
To appease (again) to the younger demographic, he's recruited the Ms. Pouts-A-Lot, Lana Del Rey for Bravest's next single, "Dayglo Reflection". Say what you will about Ms. Del Rey (and her pretty muddled debut album), but she holds her own on this jazzy affair and personally, I like the creeks, cracks, and wavering vocality from both Womack and Del Rey---it adds a real nice air of impromptu that isn't shined over in studio gloss, it has a real ease about it.
For further Womack fun, there is also a really neat doc about the soul man's journey in making Bravest, which you can take look at it after the cut. The Bravest Man In The Universe will be touching down June 12th, so circle that date.
