Recycle It!: DivaGeek Can Go For That...Yes Can Do

Thursday, May 3, 2012

If you don't know much about DivaGeek...you will in due time. Comprised of the vocalist/producer hybrid of Vula Malinga and Ben Jones, their blend of sound is about what you expect of their namesake---it's a whole lotta sass, with all the quirk in-between. It should be noted that Vula has been singing back-up for Sam Sparro as of recent, but with DivaGeek the spotlight is all on her and her impeccable vocal talents.

The UK duo released their long-awaited debut album, He Said She Said just last week. I haven't gotten a chance to really digest it (slaps hand out of shame), and maybe it's all because I'm too busy being hooked on the feeling that their Hall & Oates' cover of "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)" (aka my all-time fave H&O jam) is giving me. There have been many others who have covered this song (The Bird & The Bee) and those who have sampled it to great effect (De La Soul), but I have to say as a purist of Daryl and John, that DivaGeek takes the cake, cookies, and pies with this rendition. Seriously, this is how you do a cover, and a H&O cover at that. It's got some distance between the original source to where it sounds like a different tune altogether with it's even slower pace and electro-soul groove, but it still manages to reignite all the spirit n' soul from it's origin with Vula's voice just taking you all kinds of places. As usual, compare after the cut with a great live rendering of H&O's original and as a bonus also take in DivaGeek's live rendition of the this 80's classic---you'll be glad you did.

DivaGeek - I Can't Go For That (Hall & Oates cover)

  1. Thanks Jennifer for the spotlight on DivaGeek - as a fan of Vula's (BTW it's Malinga I think:) for a while it is great to hear her and Ben on this album --it is a lot of fun and her voice is as incredible as usual. I agree it is definitely sassy and quirky. This is a great cover- there is even a part where I think she does a key change that is different from the original (where she goes into the "I'll do anything you want me too") and they manage to make their electro-soul both nostalgic and forward thinking. I think I also noticed maybe a bit of a Stevie reference in "Can't Help it". I've been playing the album (especially the title track, Money , A lil' longer to name a few.) I hope your post helps get the word out about the album and helps get it the attention it deserves.
