Recycle It!: MNEK Does Kelis and Kylie
I just love the unexpected jolt of new sound adventures, and MNEK is that jolt as he kind of blindsided me with his covers of tunes by Kelis and Kylie Minogue this week. Upon hearing them, immediately my ears went to attention, ready to salute, as I have this weird thing where I like it when a male covers female tracks (i.e. Maxwell's "This Woman's Work"), not to mention, who can pass up hat tips to Kelis and Kylie's catalog?
After making buzz with Rudimental's House-tastic "Spoons" (good joint), the UK singer/producer touched down with his 'refix' of Kelis' 1999 hit, "Get Along With You", and well, he pretty much hit the nail on it, with all the intergalactic dub-step in place---plus would you believe that he recorded the vocals on his iPhone? His take on Kylie Minogue's "Put Yourself In My Place" (also vocally recorded on the iPhone) is equally engaging, and his refashioning of the track has it soaking in a more R&B groove than ever thanks to his Johnny Gill-esque vocals that dive the song into a New Jack slow jammy thing. As this is possibly my all-time favorite Kylie song, his cover is a wonderful surprise.
Pretty much I'm rehashing all the praise I gave recently about MNEK and these covers, but I just couldn't pass up another opportunity to gush about these fine sound slices.
