Album Watch: Dragonette To Expose Some Bodyparts

Thursday, July 26, 2012

Don't know what it is but the sounds of 2012's electronica output have been good to me. Pop or soul---it's being delivered---and sounding even better than last years offerings. In the sense of 'pop' I'm talking about 'grown folks pop' not the blue slushie sludge the teeny-boppers are listening too. Dragonette is what I consider 'grown folks pop', but with all the ram-bam unhinged fun they have in their music, they are purely kids at heart.

After working with producer Martin Solvieg and having success saying "Hello", the band from Toronto are releasing their third album, Body Parts (love the album cover) on September 25th, which is already going to be busy day...but there is always room for one more.

They already have released singles, the surging "Let It Go" and the 'disco suave' swivel of "The Right Woman". So far I've got mad love for 'em both. To continue on the winning streak, next single, "Rocket Ship" was released a few months back and is being offered at the low price of free. It's incredibly funky with showers of synths and lead singer Martina Sorbara trying on some Missing Persons' Dale Bozzio vocal vibes for size. All in all, this project is really shaping up. So bravo to Dragonette for making dance music not a throwaway afterthought, but a real joyride of pop smarts.

Being a grown-up never sounded so much fun.
