Audio Vision: Bat For Lashes' Gives An Ode To 'Laura'
Bat For Lashes...it's been awhile, hasn't it? "Daniel" and "Pearl's Dream" off of 2009's Two Suns were excellent and give me the warm and fuzzies about my little '09. Here we are three years later and it's quite obvious that Bat For Lashes aka Natasha Khan likes naming songs after people, and she's got yet another one. This time we're being introduced to "Laura", a haunting lullaby of a ballad that is pretty darn gorgeous, and highlights the rich tones in Khan's vocals. No obtrusion is present, just crystal clear singing that compliments the piano backing, and it's the type of "less" that gives you "more".
Naturally everyone is ruining the lush quiet by screaming: "THIS IS SO KATE BUSH! THIS IS SO LANA DEL REY! THIS IS SO FIONA APPLE!", but this is all Khan's melancholia show, and the comparisons really feel a bit nit-picky (okay, okay, it is a little Kate Bush-y thanks to those vocal theatrics...).
"Laura" is the first single off of Khan's upcoming third album, The Haunted Man (which has an album cover that definately is an eyebrow raiser) and I'm glad to see her back injecting some class into the indie-Pop front. The minimal yet hypnotic video is a nice companion to the song, but really just slow your roll down and listen to the track, as it's calming my multi-tasking stress ball self down right now.
