First Impressions: I Love It, Icona Pop
Tuesday, July 31, 2012
From Alphabeat's "Vacation" to Frank Ocean's "Sweet Life" there have been plenty of summer anthems coasting my way, and since we're still in the heat and sweat of it all squeezing in Icona Pop's "I Love It" into the playlist is no problemo. Quite late in discovering this Swedish duo, but they perked my ears up by pretty much succeeding to craft a song that I can only describe sounds like an wild drunk night out with the girls, with mug toasting, sloshed declarations, and a table-top dance or two.
Oh, so I'm the only one who has had nights like this? Well excuse me, Proper Attitude Police...
The manic "I Love It" is surging electro-pop of the highest order that feels sorta like La Roux and Annie in places. It's bratty and it's bold. It's like the rebirth of Vanity 6 or something, just without the lingerie, breathy come-hither, and duh, Prince. Still, it's got the same "fuck-it-all" attitude with sarcastic lyrics and reckless abandon you could ever have. The girls claim it's more of a 90's anthem by way of its best line ("You're from the 70's but I'm a 90's bitch!") so me thinks they're shooting for a crazed mixed drink of Chumbawabma's "Tubthumping" and all the the girl power punch the Spice Girls embodied---and well, they have succeeded.
Icona Pop isn't all this, oh no, they've got some other tracks from last year's Nights Like This EP that are equally as impressive and drunk on frenzied Electronica-Pop. Check out last summer's jam "Manners" and "Lovers To Friends" to hear what I mean. The Swedes have always had a lock on the pop market (see Roxette, Ace Of Base, Robyn, and oh, yeah, duh ABBA), but one more addition to that brood shouldn't be too much of a hassle especially with a song like "I Love It".
Oh, and if you're still not sold, and/or rather stay sober...worth a worship is a mash-up between Madonna's 1986 classic, "La Isla Bonita" and their track "Nights Like This"---it's fantastic.
