First Impressions: Country Time With SZA

Thursday, August 30, 2012

It's been a bit drab this week, yet I revel in lulls like this because it gives me ample time to catch up and enjoy these last gasps of summer. Digging in my 'save for a dry spell cache', SZA's "Country" has emerged, and well, here we are.

SZA hails from St. Louis, and that bit of info is refreshing in itself considering how most of the alternative side of soul that has recently been dropped has floated on over from across the Atlantic. I have to say that SZA does a quite a battle cry with "Country". Its bold in places, yet so very gentile in others, possibly thanks to her fluffy vocals dipping and diving through the waves of static and the hypnotic backdrop. Just one listen will let you know that "Country" is anything but small-time.

SZA's also got another track, "Time Travel Undone" in her pocket and it'll be included (along with "Country") on her debut EP, See SZA Run, which is coming in the very near future. For now, wander around in this...
