First Impressions: Ellie Goulding Tells Us 'Anything Could Happen'
Some more spirited electronica goodness is coming from the pixie pop darling Ellie Goulding with her new single, "Anything Could Happen". After wow-ing us with her Active Child and The Weeknd covers you'd think she'd lounge out. Thankfully, Miss Goulding is still in overdrive. Optimistic it is in its wording with jubilant airy synths for its backdrop, the Jim Elliot produced "Anything Can Happen" does give one a lot to chew on as it's packed with surging tempo changes and vocal whiplashes. Its structure varies from what we have been accustomed to on her exceptional 2010 debut album, Lights (which is charting very well at the moment), and it proves that Ellie is taking some challenges for her upcoming sophomore effort Halcyon. She even gets her church on during the climaxing refrains and it's these little growls in her voice that really take the song into uncharted territories.
It's a real brisk welcome to her that Ellie is expanding her sound a bit. Though this track is a grower for me, for the time being it's just refreshing to hear a young artist take some damn risks when it comes to evolving their sound. Other artists (yes, even you chart-baiting veterans) take notes. Indulge in this sugar rush after the cut and hang on tight as Halcyon is due to arrive October 9th.
