First Impressions: Flying Lotus & Erykah Badu 'See Thru To U'

Friday, August 17, 2012

Abstract and just, the hotly anticipated collaboration between Flying Lotus and Erykah Badu has emerged. Positioned for FlyLo's upcoming Until The Quiet Comes, "See Thru To U" has you wading through a web of percussion, tambourines, and Badu's boomerang vocals. If that wasn't enough venturing, you've also got Thundercat's bass riffs to sift through, and you'll love getting tangled up in those. Condensed it all is, even though it clocks in less than three minutes, but the two pals love for progressive and complex Jazz is ever so evident that it feels that there is more to it than meets the ear.

After the much regarded Cosmogramma from 2010 (which was an album that seriously had to grow on me), there was some query into how Quiet was going to impede and expand on what was before. Uncertain it all is, considering "See Thru To U" takes on multiple personalities---Jazz? Trip-Hop? Free-form whatever? Then again...why box it in and spoil the mystery before its time?

For those audiophile friends of mine who like keep things minimal but profound, peep it after the cut.
