First Impressions: Robin Thicke Brings On 'Another Life'

Tuesday, August 7, 2012

Today I woke up not thinking a new Robin Thicke jam would be knocking in my in-box. Life's little surprises, right? Even though Thicke has been associated with the Neptunes since "Wanna Love You Girl", rarely do they record together. Which is why it struck me strange when Mr. Lovey-Dovey Man hinted at reuniting with the Neptunes for a new project some months back. He wasn't telling fibs as plop in my lap comes "Another Life" their first step out back as collaborative partners in music crime. A dance-floor ready swiveler it is as it combines two of my favorite things: 1) Thicke's enthusiastic vocal charms, and 2) the Neptunes vintage laced productions.

While this shimmering synthy groove-a-thon does perk my spirits up, "Another Life" does ring a bell on various levels. By "bell" I'm reffering to American Idol alum Leah Labelle as Thicke's track sounds like a distant cousin to her single "Sexify" and surprise! Pharrell and Chad are behind that slick joint as well. Not to mention a striking Justin Timberlake vibe a la Justified era/ "Rock Your Body" is nestled in there with Thicke sounding oh so Timberlake-ish in his harmonies. Sounds to me like we got a bit of recycling going on... Still, with all that's said and done, a sucker I am for Thicke and the Neptunes...so I'll let those little similarities squeak by unnoticed.
