First Impressions: Counting Changes With Kylie Auldist
Thursday, September 6, 2012
Australia's other Kylie---Kylie Auldist that is---strides in with a pair of singles that have pretty much banished me from under the little Eeyore house of sticks I had built for myself this week. Pegged for her upcoming third album, Still Life , "Counting On You" and "Changes" have The Bamboos favorite front-woman in very high spirits.
"Counting On You" is Jackson 5 to the hilt, even in its lyrical structure, but it is all Auldist in how her vocals plow through and give you that summery shimmer.
What I'm more enamored by is "Changes", and yes, I'm still talking about it. It's a spirited Disco ram-bam that is embellished with horns, soaring strings, plucky bass---all that good ol' arsenal that urges me to put on strappy heels and just burn this disco down. In some aspects, "Changes" reminds me of one of my favorites from the era of dance decadence and that would be Candi Stanton's "Young Hearts Run Free". Something in the saccharine sweet vibrancy and controlled vocals makes me wonder if Auldist derived some inspiration from Miss Stanton. Whatever the case, after hearing this, I could seriously go for a Disco revival right about now.
