Mr Hudson Gets His Fred Astaire On

Wednesday, April 17, 2013

Who knew that Mr Hudson released a song...last month? Oh, welp.

The once-Kanye West connected crooner (remember the awesome "Paranoid"?) who released the extremely underrated electro-soul icicle, Straight No Chaser in 2009 is back, and he's breaking in some new shoes for the occasion as he rolls out single "Fred Astaire".

Featuring a sample of Jimmy Ruffin's "What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted", Mr Hudson has exchanged the frosted synth work and emo journal scribbles and is going for a retro Prince-esque slow swing thing that fits with the ideal of the legendary dancer and his suave footwork (it irked my soul that some bloggers writing this song up didn't know who Astaire was...really?). The spiffed up song is mighty fine till it gets a bit convoluted towards the end --- unless it's "abstract experimentation" that is supposed to push the music envelope. Meh.

News of a brand new project is undetermined at blog post time, but with this new direction, it's anyone's guess where Mr Hudson will take us as 2013 presses on.
