Artist Watch: Banks

Wednesday, June 5, 2013

My eyebrow shot up out of intrigue for LA-based singer Banks after hearing her completely arresting single, "Warm Water". I mentioned that the song made me miss winter --- well, slightly --- because it was so comforting and chilling. Not to mention Banks has this sultry R&B sound that extends off the branches of what Aaliyah, Amel Larrieux, and Badu at her most "Window Seat" introspective concocted.

Banks has a pretty good line-up of material on her Soundcloud page, with just as immersing songs, like the bluesy mood piece, "Before I Ever Met You" and the shrill operatic pulse of "Fall Over". She also was featured on the club sparkler, Lil Silva's "Work" proving that she can play the genre checkerboard, and win. It's all game, set, match for Banks, who certainly has my undivided attention for whatever sounds she has in store.
