Take 5 Friday: Summer Sound Stack, Week #2

Friday, June 14, 2013

...and we continue with the stack. Also remember to share your five favorite tracks of the week in the comment section! :)

Moon Boots - Sugar
Even wondered what Janet Jackson's "If" sounded as a hip-swiveling throwback funk joint? Moon Boots answers that question with "Sugar", his re-imagining of the beloved Jackson 1993 hit. The French DJ already captivated me this week with his 90's House-tastic "Love Strong" but I stuck around and found club jam nirvana with "Sugar". [Listen]

Girls Can't Help It - Rhythm Of The Jungle
Obscure hi-NRG funk. I spazzed out about finding this EP last year from these three Brits who just didn't fly off the runway back in 1983 and I'm still listening to it. Their cover of The Quick's "Rhythm Of The Jungle" (which I slighted before) does take you high, featuring grinding guitars and dry sung-spoken lyrics that hint a little at what Bernadette Cooper did with Klymaxx.  ...and oooh the bass lines...pure marriage material. Take a listen here. [Listen]

Bobby - More Than Just A Friend
Even though I'm still spinning Quadron's recently released Avalanche (you must get that album! Now!), Robin Hannibal can do bad by himself, as he lets his alter ego Bobby come back out to play. With "More Than Just A Friend" he wooshes out a fizzy n' dreamy Latin-tinged disco wonder that is all-around resplendent. [Listen]

Prince - Ain't Gonna Miss U When U're Gone (feat. Ledisi)
A song that sounds as good as it spells out on paper. Really. Six minutes of pristine n' sparse funk that is laced with vocal vamping from Ledisi. I digs. Since Prince is a little stingy you can stream the audio at various sites and if you like what you hear (which I bet you will) you can purchase the song at the 3rd Eye Girl site for less than a buck. [Listen]

Soldier's Heart - African Fire
Aquatic and atmospheric sounds from a up-in-coming quartet from Belgium. Lead singer Sylvie Kreusch has a Lana Del Rey flair to her voice --- but she sounds less depressed. Yay. [Listen]
