How rude of me to not express my sadness over hearing about the passing of producer, multi-instrumentalist, Jazz-Fusion pioneer George Duke, who passed away this Monday at the age of 67. I grew up listening to his music (props to Audio Dad!) and had a fondness of his experimental and genre crossing style. Especially loved the work he did for and with other artists like Irene Cara, Dianne Reeves, Stanley Clarke, Sister Sledge, Sheila E. (who got her start in his band back in the '70s), and my personal favorite collaboration, the legendary Brazilian chanteuse Flora Purim.
If you don't know who George Duke is then don't stand there questioning or shrugging shoulders, go out and load up and listen to some material! I suggest plugging in most of his '70s material such as albums, Reach For It, Master Of The Game, Don't Let Go, and especially his love letter to the enchantment of Brazil, 1980's Brazilian Love Affair.
May he rest in power.
