Kelis can pretty much do whatever she wants as she's prowled in just about every nook and cranny that music has had to offer ever since she first stomped and screamed on the scene with "Caught Out There" back in 1999. So nobody should be shocked at the curve ball she's thrown with her latest release, "Been Given A Morning", which has her in a jazzy state of mind. Her raspy tone is well-suited for this slow burning ballad, as she lays it down in a pensive bed of strings, flugelhorn, and piano that is eyebrow raising good. It doesn't stay lush for long (I mean, this is Kelis we're talking about...) as an alternate flavor charges mid-way in, taking the song to a static cosmic climb. After hearing her last offering, the chugging Afro-funk goodness of "Jerk Ribs", Kelis' F.O.O.D. project sounds like its going to be a buffet of engaging sounds when it is unveiled next year.
Hear Kelis getting her torch on after the cut. I digs it, do you?
