Gotta Love #LoveJo

While I was out celebrating Singles' Awareness Day this past Friday, JoJo decided to sprinkle a little music lovey-dovey for the special occasion. The last we've heard from JoJo was from the keenly good short player, Agápē, but as usual JoJo's label tussles took center stage. I hope that JoJo's recent move to Atlantic Records will give her the sturdy platform she deserves to release the material she sees fit, and part of my wish is answered as she rockets off right with #LoveJo and schools us on the art of cover songs.
Anita Baker's "Caught Up In The Rapture", Phil Collins' "Take Me Home", and Gospel staple, "Glory" are given readings on this brief set and they are flawless. Yes, you read right. Flawless. Super poised she is on these songs, meeting Baker's sultriness on "Rapture" and making Collins' "Home" into her own testament (and she gets another +1 for re-doing a lesser-celebrated Collins' song). But "Glory" is where she really gives the standing-O as she delivers a spine-chilling nuanced performance that further proves her vitality in the Soul game. This isn't the same girl who emerged ten years ago with "Leave (Get Out)", this is a woman maturing into her craft with great grace, and my goodness it's criminal that some of us have been slumbering on that fact. While we continue to wait for record labels and the fickle music listening public to figure out what to do with JoJo, at current, #LoveJo deserves all the candy hearts, chocolate assortment boxes, and your undivided attention.
