Banks Knows Goddesses Need Love Too

Tuesday, April 29, 2014

"You put her down/You liked her hopeless/To walk around, feeling unnoticed/You should have crowned her, ’cause she’s a goddess/ You never got this"

Feel that? That's a girl power punch right there. Banks' latest is mostly a jab at her dissenters, but I can just bet that a bulk of these lyrics are going into the lexicon of us femmes who need an empowerment boost every now and then (and really she's all for it). I mean, the lyrics of "Goddess" are too much of a delicious word smackdown to be ignored, and Banks is hard to ignore herself as her latest single continues to have the singer prowl astutely in the dark alleyways of R&B that brought her to rapt attention last year. She's slipped into the shadows more and more since she released the luxurious, "Warm Water", with singles "Brain" and the Jamie Woon-assisted, "This Is What It Feels Like" --- even a Peter Gabriel cover harbored her in a morose mood. "Goddess" is of the same ilk as it nocturnally moves on Lil' Silva's production, rolling in fog-like on gurgling bass and serene synths, and it's all-around alluring.

The release of "Goddess" is the jump start for Banks to unveil her anticipated debut album (also of the same name), but we'll have to wait for the September 9th calendar date for even more cerebral musings to occur. Can't wait. Peep the lyrical video after the cut to dive deeper into Banks' headspace.
