Elle Varner Says Some Four Letter Words
Tuesday, April 1, 2014
Elle Varner has got some four letter words for you. She hasn't taken up the swearing arts (or what I like to call "sentence enhancers"), but Miss Varner is talking about the other four letter words ("love" and "lies") for two new songs. Varner's acclaimed 2011 debut, Perfectly Imperfect, was just that (half good, half needing some refined direction), but there is always room for growth, and Varner seems to have found some wiggle room. Having not kept up, Varner is already giving previews to her upcoming album, 4 Letter Word. "Cold Case" with its wonderfully sarcastic opening, and the Wale guest spotted "Rover" have made appearances in the last few months, but I'm more here for her latest installment, "See Me Tonight". It has an slight Amy Winehouse ring to it, but Varner sets herself apart as the grungy jazz-soul atmosphere allows her to be versatile in her diction, but has her retain some vocal control (which had been a problem on her debut). She pulls it all off and completely wipes off the powdered sugared R&B exterior of the vibe she exuded on her debut. Growing pains never sounded so good.
