Janelle Monáe Shows Off Her Heroics On David Bowie Cover
Wednesday, April 2, 2014
Ever had a dream musical mash-up? I have several, and strangely enough most of them include having the tunes of Janelle Monáe and David Bowie merge together to make for an extreme cosmic collision of left-field creations (come on "Sally Ride" needed a splash of Bowie in there, right?) So you'll understand my glee over Monáe choosing to cover Bowie's 1977 classic, "Heroes" for a brand-new Pepsi campaign. As a noted fan of the Thin White Duke, Monáe respects the original composition, but with her take she twists "Heroes" to fit her spunky funk pedigree and it works. Of course it doesn't have the magical finesse and spontaneity that occurred when Bowie and producer Brain Eno were having a meeting of the creative minds 30+ years ago, but anything that pays a genuine homage to such an iconic song deserves a listen or two. All I wonder now is that if Cindi Mayweather and Ziggy Stardust ever met, what would transpire? What would the offspring look and sound like? Um, fan fiction writers....make this happen, stat.
